Marvel Comics Presents…Vaughn Bode?
"People like Stan Lee have offered me series to do, comic series, and I’ve always had to turn them down," Vaughn Bode told an interviewer in 1974. “I insist on having, first of all, my own rights…the only one who’s ever been able to protect my rights was myself. Most artists, especially when I first met them, were selling all their rights in New York all over the place, to publishers who were very greedy monsters, and they’d take away everything if they could. But now things are changing, in the last few years.”
Bode may have turned down the opportunity to do a series for Stan Lee, but in 1973, his lizards showed up on the back cover of the first issue of Marvel’s Crazy magazine. Note the © symbol next to his name—twice. Not sure if this was a previously published strip, or if it was commissioned especially for the House of Ideas. Anyone know?
